Rape is a terrifying word, and you may have heard it only on TV but it exists out in this cold world where people become savage animals and lay their hands on any person for their own sexual pleasures. As hard as it is to believe in recent years the crime rate has gone up even more for rape and you would be surprised to see the countries that have such high numbers. That is why today we are going to shed some light on those countries that come within the Top Ten for Highest Rape Crimes, it is nothing fun to talk about but anything that can be done to shed awareness needs to be highlighted. 1.South Africa

The country has one of the highest rape crime rate in the world, with some 65,000 rapes and other sexual assaults reported for the year ending in March 2012, or 127.6 per 100,000 people in the country.The incidence of rape has led to the country being referred to as the “rape capital of the world”.One in three of the 4,000 women questioned by the Community of Information, Empowerment and Transparency said they had been raped in the past year.

A high number of murders of taxi owners or drivers have not resulted in either arrests or successful prosecutions. Yet the graph of sexual assault does not come down. The country has recently attained freedom from apartheid and racial discrimination. 90% of the population did not have equal rights earlier. A myth that sex with a virgin cures AIDS also contributes to the high incidence of rapes with children.



2.United Kingdom

Many people wish to live or even visit UK as it is one of the most developed countries. But they surely must not be aware that this country is also involved badly in the crime of rape. In January 2013, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), Office for National Statistics (ONS) and Home Office released its first ever joint Official Statistics bulletin on sexual violence, entitled An Overview of Sexual Offending in England and Wales. According to report: Approximately 85,000 women are raped on average in  England and Wales every year. Over 400,000 women are sexually assaulted each year. One in 5 women (aged 16 – 59) has experienced some form of sexual violence since the age of 16.

3.Sweden

Sweden now has the third highest rape crime rate in the world, after South Africa, which at 53.2 per 100,000. Statistics now suggest that 1 out of every 4 Swedish women comes out to be the victim of rape. If you look at the number of rapes, however, the increase is even worse. In 1975, there were only 421 rapes reported to the police – in 2014, it was 6,620. That is an increase of 1,472%. It would
seem Sweden is a much more dangerous place for women in the world.

In addition, Sweden has the highest rate of rape in Europe. In 2013, according to the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention (Brå), there were 63 rape cases per 100,000 population reported to the Swedish police.



4.New Zealand

The entry of the neighboring country of Australia, New Zealand, to the list is related to the cases committed by the group The Roast Busters in 2013. As a point of differentiation from other countries, NZ cases are mostly on date rapes. Although partner cases are quite low, such still occurs. In general, the latest rape rate of the country is 30.9% or 30,900 out of 100,000 people. Similar to Australia, the
15% yearly increase in the cases is related to the low number of conviction.

5.India

The country India has been a consistent entry to the list of top countries with highest rape crime rate. In a 2015 report from National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) mentioned that there are 34,651 of reported cases related to rape and sexual violence, as well as 4,437 of attempted rape cases. What is more alarming is that 95.5% or 33,098 from such are done by people who knew or are close to the victim.

In addition, 17,000 from the total number of victims are people who belong to the population aged between 18 and 30. People ageing 60 years old and above cover over 5,000 of the cases. Another disturbing fact is that children below 16, as well as infants are also being raped.

7.Canada

Reports from Canada’s Sexual Assault Centre have shown that there are 460,000 reported cases of sexual abuse in the country. A high percentage, which is 82%, is committed by people who are close or who knew the victims. The high number of reported cases is related to the high awareness level of women with regard to sexual consent. Thus, they know when their rights are being violated or not.



8.Australia

The rape laws in Australia have evolved from the English common law, but have gradually evolved in the late 20th century. In Australia, the reported rape rate per 100,000 people is relatively high. However, this is coming down from the earlier high figure of 91.6 in 2003 to 28.6 in 2010. Yet it has been estimated that only about 15 to 20 percent of cases get reported to the Police. Moreover, non-sexual intrusion and sexual assault are also included in the rape definition as per
Australian laws.

9.Sri Lanka

In the first eleven months of the year 2015, Colombo reported that there were 1,854 of rape cases. That good thing is that 92.61 percent or 1,717 of such cases have been resolved by the police. The reported cases showed that an alarming high number of victims who are under 16 years of age. Such number is 1,501. However, although the numbers are low in the country, it should be noted that legally married couples who are forced to have sex are not considered as rape.



10.Ethiopia

Rape is a very serious problem in Ethiopia. The country is infamous for the practice of marriage by abduction, with the prevalence of this practice in Ethiopia being one of the highest in the world. In many parts of Ethiopia, it is common for a man, working in co-ordination with his friends, to kidnap a girl or woman, sometimes using a horse to ease the escape. The abductor will then hide his intended bride and rape her until she becomes pregnant.
